When the Rain Comes

“…for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭45‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“Why me”? This is a common question when something tragic happens. At least, it is a question that comes across my mind.

If this is you, you’re not alone. It is easy to find ourselves questioning things that happen to us and why not someone else, possibly someone stronger.

As Christ’s followers, we can get caught up in asking God why bad things happen to us when we are doing His work.

The verse at the top of this post sums it up for us. Whether we follow Christ or not, He will send rain and sunshine.

Most recently, I have been tempted to question why tragedy struck me even though I have been drawing closer to God and spreading His gospel more than ever. But in the back of my mind, I know the answer. I know that no matter what I do or say, I will face tragedy. On the other side of that coin, I will also face triumphant times.

You see, God is a just, faithful, and loving God. As a Father, He will be fair to all His children and loves us equally.

“For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world…”

John‬ ‭3‬:‭16‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Bad things happen because of the first sin, not because God is causing them. Yes, God allows bad things to happen but not because He wants to hurt us. God uses these times in our lives and creates something good out of them.

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

John‬ ‭16‬:‭33‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Amid heartbreak, I still find it hard to write these words, but I know they are true. It is my job as a follower of Christ to spread the good news.

The good news is that God loves us and will be there to comfort and strengthen us during these times.

“Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.”

Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭4‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Another question that we may find ourselves asking is, “What did I do wrong”?

Anytime something tragic happens, it doesn’t necessarily mean it was because of something we did wrong. We tend to associate bad things with consequences. This isn’t always so.

For instance, if you get in a car accident on the way to work, it doesn’t mean it was because of something you did wrong. It could just as easily have been a freak accident or from the other driver.

If you experience a pregnancy loss, a majority of the time, doctors will tell you it was a problem with genetics at conception and there was nothing you could’ve done to stop it.

If you were given a cancer diagnosis, it doesn’t mean you didn’t take care of yourself.

You may be thinking, “These are tragedies that cannot always be prevented” to these scenarios. However, when suffering, it is easy to question if you made a mistake in causing the tragedy. Beyond that, we wonder if we sinned and God is punishing us. He already told us that we will suffer; Jesus suffered in this world, and He never sinned!

God is a merciful and gracious God. He is not sitting in heaven waiting for us to mess up so He can punish us and teach us a lesson.

“Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; Yes, our God is merciful.”

Psalms‬ ‭116‬:‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I was inspired to write this post in my suffering. I have learned that good things will happen to bad people and vice versa; this is a fact of life and the result of sin that entered the world long ago.

I want to encourage you today, that when the rain comes, hold on to God’s truth. God’s Word is truth! The more we believe and hold on to it, the more we will feel our spirits lifting. (I know I do!)

“For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.”

Psalms‬ ‭30‬:‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬
