“Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.”
- Isaiah 43:19 NKJV
“Sometimes, when God closes a door, He opens a window.”
This is a phrase my 5-year-old said to me during a time of uncertainty.
I was completely astonished and asked where she heard that phrase. She, of course, told me her favorite stuffed Minnie Mouse told her, but I knew it was from God.
Let me back up.
Years ago, my husband and I moved into a dream apartment. It wasn’t brand new or anything, but it had everything we were looking for at the price point we wanted it.
It was a blessing from God, especially after living in a shared house with roommates we didn’t know.
Anyway, we lived in this apartment for 7 years. And in that time frame, we went from fairly newlyweds to a married couple with a young family.
Needless to say, we outgrew our apartment.
After having our first child, we knew we would move eventually but didn’t feel the pressure until we found out we were having another baby.
But it wasn’t time for us to move yet and we made it work.
Rental after rental, we didn’t feel the peace of God leading us to move. So we stayed. Crazy? Maybe.
However, God taught us so much during this time of waiting.
He taught us contentment.
He taught us to endure even when everyone around us was pressuring us.
He taught us financial planning.
He taught us to trust and find our confidence in Him.
He taught us to remember where He brought us.
He taught us to fix our eyes on Him and not to base our decisions on others.
He taught us to seek Him FIRST.
Don’t get me wrong, we loved our apartment. We just outgrew it. I didn’t want to leave because we had so many memories but I also wanted to leave because we all wanted more space.
My husband and I agreed we would not rush into the decision, rather, we would pray on it and agree with one another. If these options did not give us peace and go ahead from God, we would not go anywhere.
I’ve heard many times that if God has not given you an answer yet, wait. Be still and wait.
Waiting is the HARDEST thing.
We looked at multiple rentals. We even talked to mortgage brokers.
Then the day came when we realized the market wasn’t in our favor and maybe we ought to look at a bigger rental while we waited for the right time to buy a house.
That was our plan and the plan God gave us peace about!
God opened up the right rental and I started doubting and contemplating if this was the right choice. After all, we wanted to continue saving for a house so why move somewhere that costs more, right?
As I was pondering, I was sitting with my children and my eldest suddenly said, “Mom, sometimes, when God closes a door, He opens a window.”
My mouth about hung open because I KNEW at that moment that God was speaking through my child to assure me that this indeed was the right choice for our family, and it was time to move.
You see, we were waiting for the door of buying a house to open up. We were determined to stay where we were until we could find and buy a home. However, we were also getting weary of renting a smaller place.
So, God opened that sweet window for us and we have so much peace and are so thankful for our new home that we also love!
That is my super long story but also my testimony.
I encourage you today to never give up hope!
Just because your ideal situation, dream, or goal doesn’t happen right away, doesn’t mean it won’t. Sometimes God needs to bring you to a different place. His plans are greater than ours and He knows the future.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
- Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV
Praise God that He makes a way when we think all hope is lost!
If you’re waiting for a door to open up, keep holding on to Jesus. He may open that door right away or have a window open for you while you wait for the right door to become available at the right time.
“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”
Galatians 6:9 NKJV
